REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - The Need for Repentance

It was common belief among the Jews that the experience of a calamity or disaster is a physical manifestation of sin(s) committed either by the person or the parents (cf Jn 9:1-2). So, it likely was with those who came to report the scene in Luke 13:1-9 to Jesus. This presents a suitable moment of teaching for Jesus on the need for everyone to repent. Jesus’ response, “Do you suppose they were more guilty …?” does not imply those affected by the disasters had no sin. However, the salient message is that all need to repent. The parable he gives us today further clarifies that Christ’s focus was on repentance. The fruit expected from the vine (the house of Israel cf Isa 5) is repentance. Unfortunately, God’s people were not yielding to the message of repentance preached by Jesus. Perhaps they felt they were sinless. Some of them particularly, the leaders had a holier than thou attitude and so ignored the message of Christ. Let us heed to the teachings of Christ and during this Lenten Season, come to repent of our sins that we may experience the salvation God offers to his people.
