REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS

Preparing the way for the Lord through repentance The thrust of John’s ministry is repentance leading to forgiveness of sins. He emphasizes honesty and humility. In our world of rampant corruption, what place has honesty? In a society of one-upmanship who thinks of humility? To succeed one has to cheat; to win one has to be aggressive. While dishonesty and pride bring only short-term success, honesty and humility produce lasting fruits. Above all, they unfailingly lead to the Saviour and the salvation he brings. Consequently, those who despise these virtues invariably fail to accept the humble Carpenter of Nazareth and his message of salvation.

ADVENT: Sunday, November 28 begins the Season of Advent where we prepare for Christmas, when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a time of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday’s Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of the season. Let us remember and respond to this expectation in prayer, quiet time and preparation for the celebration of Christmas.
