REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - True Greatness lies in Service

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the apostles who is the greatest in the Kingdom of God. The greatest is the one with the qualities of a child – simplicity, humility, obedience, innocence, purity, and dependence. Like children, we need to accept our weaknesses and vulnerability. No matter how rich, famous and intelligent we are, without the help of God we are nothing. This awareness of our weakness and vulnerability leads to total trust in God. St James adds that jealousy, envy, and greed engender dispute, discord, and disharmony. Our dissatisfaction with ourselves and our desire for what another owns destroy our inner peace, distort our perspective on life, and make it difficult for us to love others. In our jealousy and ambition, we insult, torture, and condemn others (sometimes even to shameful death) because others are inconvenient to us (Book of Wisdom). On the contrary, Jesus teaches us the way of service, humility, and suffering that leads to a life of joy, beauty, and true greatness. May God teach us the lesson of true greatness!
