REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - The Final Coming of the Son of Man

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. We have another opportunity to prepare for the two-fold coming of Christ, our Messiah-King. Our advent preparation to thankfully celebrate his first coming at Christmas is at the same time another opportunity to prepare ourselves for his second coming at the end of time. Both comings deserve a well-planned and spirit-filled preparation, in order to fully re-enact the blessings of the incarnation and embrace the gift of communion with him in heaven at the end of our earthly journey. The many Advent seasons we are privileged to enjoy remind us that our entire life is one long season of Advent: time spent in preparation for the coming of our God. Honestly, this description of the end times frightens us. But we are relieved to realize that the universal catastrophe (and destruction) is not the final word. At the end of it all we “will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory”. Prepare our heart, Lord to celebrate your first coming. Let us also meditate on your final coming ever bearing in mind that your final coming is what confers meaning and purpose to your first coming. May our preparation be holy and our celebration of life be full.

ADVENT: Sunday, November 28 begins the Season of Advent where we prepare for Christmas, when we recall Christ’s first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a time of joyful expectation. During Advent, each Sunday’s Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of the season. Let us remember and respond to this expectation in prayer, quiet time and preparation for the celebration of Christmas.
