REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - The Gift of the Holy Spirit
The Feast of Pentecost celebrates the fulfillment of the promise of Jesus of sending the Holy Spirit upon the apostles to help them carry out the mission entrusted to them. Just as Jesus was anointed with the Spirit at the beginning of his ministry so also the apostles needed the anointing of the Spirit to be effective in their mission. The Holy Spirit is given to all who are baptized into Christ to enable them to live a new way of life - a life of love, peace, joy, and righteousness. The Holy Spirit fills our hearts with the love of God and he gives us the strength and courage we need in order to live our Christian life. Just as God breathed life into Adam, so the gift of the Holy Spirit is an imparting of “new life” to his people. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, a new creation begins. Jesus’ gift of peace to his disciples was more than an absence of troubles and problems in life. His peace included the forgiveness and the fullness of everything good. Do we pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit in our lives to live a faithful Christian life? Lord, we too have experienced what it feels like when the heart sits crouched in a corner in the grip of fear. When I am shut up behind the heavy doors of my own fears, anxieties, and sins, Lord send your Spirit to break open my doors and bathe me in your grace. My dear friends in Christ, give the Holy Spirit space to direct your life. He is a person you can receive and experience. Welcome him into your life as a special friend this Pentecost Sunday.
