REFLECTION ON TODAY’S READINGS - “Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity” – (Luke 12:13-21) - “What is better than money? More money!” This is an advertisement I saw some years ago. It sums up the greed for possessions and envy of wealth so characteristic of our age. Jesus says very little about taking that which belongs to others. But He speaks plainly and often about withholding that which others need. So, the point of the Gospel story is not that there is anything wrong with the farmer amassing wealth, but that he intends to hoard it. That is his sin. He is called “foolish” because he does not recognize his wealth as coming from God. The first reading lays bare before us the meaning of human life without God. “Vanity of vanities! All things are vanity.” Perhaps the reason that not too many of us are entrusted with great riches is that God knows what would happen to our hearts as a result. In fact, the rich man had greater responsibilities towards them because “everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required” (Lk 12: 48). Hence, Jesus, today invites us to be grateful for all the rich ‘harvests’ in our lives, to have a realistic vision of life, and to recognize and fulfill our duties, especially our duties towards the less privileged and the marginalized in the society. Today more than ever before, there exists the worship of money; everything is immolated at the altar of the money god. Material possessions are necessary for our life, but they are not the source of our life nor are they the secret to our happiness. Only the one who loves and lives in solidarity and openness towards others possesses life in its fullness.

ANNUAL ST. ANNE'S MISSION on the island Mniku, near Potlotek. - The outdoor Mass and Procession will take place Sunday, July 31, beginning at 2 pm. Saint Anne is the Patron Saint of the Mi’kmaq. The Mother of Mary and Grandmother of Jesus, she is valued as an elder for her wisdom and strength. Fr. Pierre Maillard offered the first Mass in 1742 from a boulder on Mniku, making this annual Mission the longest continuous mission in Canada, possibly in North America. The island of Mniku was declared a National Historic Site in 2005.
