In light of this note from Bishop Dunn we will be distributing the Precious Blood from the chalice again beginning Holy Thursday:

Liturgical Restrictions Connected with the H1N1 Flu Virus and Communion From the Cup

In light of the fact that the second wave of the H1N1 flu virus outbreak has tapered off, and based on the latest information from our parishes, medical professionals and local health units, I believe that it is time to revisit the restrictions in liturgical practices that were imposed due to this virus outbreak. I am asking all parishes to lift all the restrictions in liturgical practices associated with the H1N1 flu virus, e.g., the reception of communion from the cup and on the tongue, shaking hands for the Sign of Peace, the removal of holy water, etc...

I would like to thank all of you for implementing these restrictions and I would encourage parishes to continue to promote health and safety best practices.

With the offering of communion from the cup again, it might be important for us to recall that “

Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under both kinds” (GIRM, 2000, n. 281). Therefore, I highly recommend that communion from the cup be offered on Sundays and weekdays, including funeral liturgies... This may also be an appropriate time to review the Diocesan Guidelines for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

We might note the following points:

1) The priest is the Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Whenever there are concelebrating priests, it is their role to assist in the distribution of communion. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are required only if there are insufficient numbers of clergy.

2) While the washing of hands by the priest is a symbolic gesture, no provision is made for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to engage in the washing of hands during the Liturgy. Washing of hands may take place prior to the beginning of the liturgy.

3) We need to reconsider how parishioners might receive communion from hosts consecrated at the Mass that they attend. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states: “It is most desirable that the faithful ... receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass ... so that even by means of the signs Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated” (GIRM, 2000, n. 85). Therefore, the common practice of automatically going to the tabernacle for consecrated hosts needs to be discontinued so that all parishioners will be able to participate more fully in the celebration of the Eucharist, and not merely receive hosts from the tabernacle.
